Action and contemplation are the two polarities that regulate and balance the faith-filled life. It saddens me that most Christianity is right in the middle. It's neither radical interiority nor radical engagement. You don't learn much in the mediocre middle and you don't have much to give. These words have been rattling around in my head since yesterday morning. Am I in the mediocre middle? God, I hope not! I remember my first yoga teacher 45 years ago saying "Moderation in all that you do." And my thinking - that's not how I get things done - but still, all these years I have attempted to temper my action with some inaction. And, particularly now, I am learning to intersperse some contemplation within my action. It's still not balanced, but I'm getting closer. As the Buddhists say, "The Middle Road." They DON'T say ' the mediocre middle'. There's a difference. Think about that.
